Privacy policy Rijk aan Zee

Privacy matters to Rijk aan Zee. When you book an accommodation with us, you place your trust in us, and we appreciate that. That is why we are committed to securing and carefully safeguarding all personal data you entrust to us.

In this statement, we describe how we use and process your personal data. You can also read how to contact us if you have any questions about your personal data.

Rijk aan Zee offers online accommodation-related services through its own websites, as well as through other online platforms such as the websites of tour operators and social media. This privacy statement applies to all of our platforms.

If you are an accommodation owner, we also recommend reading the Privacy Statement for accommodation owners. Please also read our separate cookie statement, in which we explain how Rijk aan Zee uses cookies.

If you do not agree with this Privacy Statement, please do not use our services. If you agree with our Privacy Statement, you are most welcome to use our services.

Your privacy is important to us.

1. What personal data does Rijk aan Zee collect?

Without information, we cannot help you book an accommodation. When you use our services, there are therefore certain details we ask for. These are fairly general items, such as your name, contact details and date of birth.

In addition, we also collect information from your computer, phone, tablet or other device you use to access our services, including the IP address, the browser you use and your language settings. In some situations, we also receive information about you from others or automatically collect other information.

1.1 Personal data you provide to us

Rijk aan Zee collects and uses information that you provide to us. When you make a Reservation, you will be asked for your name, email address, home address, telephone number, payment details, date of birth and any special requirements.

When you contact our customer service, we will also collect information from you. Guests may also be asked to leave a review to help future guests find what they are looking for. We will collect any information you include in your review. You may provide us with information in other situations as well. For example, when browsing on your mobile device, you may choose to give Rijk aan Zee permission to see your current location, or to grant access to your contact details so we can provide you with the best possible service and experience.

1.2 Personal data we obtain from other sources

We receive data not only from you, but also from business partners. Any information we receive from them may be combined with information provided by you.

For example, the reservation services of Rijk aan Zee are integrated into the services of business partners you can find online. If you use those, you provide your reservation details to our business partner, who in turn forwards your data to us.

We also integrate third-party services to facilitate payments between guests and accommodation owners. These service providers share payment information with us so that we can manage and process your Reservation and ensure everything runs smoothly.

Another example: we integrate telephone services into our platforms so you can contact your booked accommodation if you have questions about your stay. For this purpose, we receive metadata about phone calls (such as the location you called from, who you are, and the date and duration of the call).

Accommodation owners may also share information about you with Rijk aan Zee, for example if you have questions about your upcoming reservation, or if a dispute arises regarding your Reservation.

2. Why does Rijk aan Zee collect and use your personal data?

The main reason we ask for your personal data is to help you manage your online Reservations and to ensure you receive the best possible service. Your personal data may be used for:

Reservations: first and foremost, we use your personal data to record your online Reservation.

Customer service: by sharing your reservation information with us, we can contact you if needed. This enables us to help you find the right Accommodation and  respond to any questions you may have about your Reservation.

Marketing purposes: we use your data for marketing purposes. For example, we use your contact details to inform you about our services by email. You can unsubscribe at any time. We may personalise website content based on your information. And if you take part in other promotions (such as prize draws), the data is used to manage those promotions.

Contacting you: we may also be in touch with you at other times. This can happen for various reasons: a request from you, an incomplete reservation, an invitation to leave a review, a survey related to your reservation, or even safety alerts.

Safe service: to create a trustworthy environment for you and the accommodation owners, we use personal data for risk assessment and to detect and prevent fraud and other unwanted activities.

Improving our services: we also use your personal data for analytical purposes. This analysis aims to improve the user experience and services for groups of users. It is part of our ongoing effort to optimise our booking platform and tailor it to how you use it.

Reviews: after your stay, you may be invited to leave a review. This invitation asks for information about the accommodation and your stay. By completing a review, you agree that it may be displayed on the page of the relevant accommodation owner on our websites, in our mobile apps, on our social media accounts and apps, and on the online platforms of business partners.

This allows us to inform other travellers about the quality of the Reservation you used, the destination you chose or any other experiences you wish to share.

If you indicate whether a guest review is helpful or not, we can combine this with feedback from other guests to sort and rank guest reviews. This helps us assist other travellers like you in finding the right destination and the best accommodation.

Legal purposes: in exceptional cases, personal data is used to comply with lawful requests from law enforcement authorities.

3. How does Rijk aan Zee share your data with third parties?

Various parties are integrated into the services of Rijk aan Zee. This happens in different ways and for different reasons. The main purpose is to share the data relevant to your stay with the Accommodation owner so you can complete your reservation.

There are also other parties who may receive part of your data. These include parties we engage to provide you with the services of Rijk aan Zee, financial institutions, advertisers and, in some cases, government authorities or other bodies.

We do not sell your personal data.

In certain circumstances, we share your data with:

The accommodation owner: to complete your Reservation, we pass on the relevant details to the Accommodation owner. If you have a question about your Trip, we may contact the Accommodation owner and ask them to handle your request.

The local Rijk aan Zee reception: for the delivery of services.

Third-party services: we use third-party services to process your data on our behalf. This may be, for example, for sending marketing materials or validating the accuracy of an email address. External service providers are bound by a duty of confidentiality and are not permitted to use your personal data for purposes other than those instructed by Rijk aan Zee.

Payment services: if a refund has been requested for your Reservation, we need to share certain reservation details with the payment service and the relevant financial institutions to process the refund.

Authorities: we disclose personal data to law enforcement insofar as required by law, or necessary for the prevention, detection and prosecution of criminal offences and fraud, or where we are otherwise legally obliged to do so.

Business partners: for distributing or advertising the services of Rijk aan Zee and/or our accommodation providers.

Advertising partners: as part of Rijk aan Zee's marketing services via third parties, we may share personal data with advertising partners (including Google or Facebook). This includes your email address. For more information about personalised advertising, please read our cookie statement.

4. What security procedures does Rijk aan Zee use to safeguard your personal data?

In accordance with European data protection legislation, we implement the latest software updates known to us. Rijk aan Zee does so in the belief that this is the best way to protect personal data on our booking platform. We also make a daily backup of all software and data from our production systems.

Only authorised personnel have access to personal information, and only when required for their work.

5. How can you manage the personal data you have provided to Rijk aan Zee?

You always have the right to view the personal information we hold about you. An access function is available for this purpose in your account on the booking platform.

You can also contact us if you believe the personal information we hold about you is incorrect.

If you wish to have personal data deleted, please contact the Service Desk. We will handle your request in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
